Of all the cars that have inspired me over the years, the F40 has perhaps been my greatest motivation to wake up in the morning and start working. What’s so great about the F40? What makes it stand out as such an impressive vehicle, some twenty-years after it was originally released, despite seeing so many incredible cars in the time including the McLaren F1, Bugatti Veyron, and Enzo?
Put simply, it was the first true super car built for car guys by car guys. It was the first production car to reach 200 MPH, utilize almost a complete carbon fiber body and interior, sacrifice luxuries such as a radio, sound dampener, and door handles in favor of better acceleration and cornering. It was also the last car designed by Enzo Ferrari before he died. What a great way to complete his legacy: a street driven race car with the sexiest back-end ever put on wheels.
The F40’s twin turbo 2.9 liter V8 pumped out 470 horsepower, a rather unimpressive number these days by super car standards, but in some configurations the car weighed under 2500 pounds, still giving it mind blowing acceleration. And of course, the exhaust note was one of the most beautiful ever emitted from a combustion engine.
While I would not want to drive one in Los Angeles traffic every day, I feel the need to constantly tell people what a wonderful car the F40 was for the reasons mentioned above. Here are a few videos to show the F40’s real beauty:
